‘Tis the Season for Smart Sipping
The holiday season has officially begun, and there’s no stopping it now! The holidays are filled with social soirees, but that can also mean added temptation to indulge in alcoholic beverages. Don’t deprive yourself of a yummy cocktail, but remember to drink in moderation this holiday season.
4 Tips to Sip Smart
1. Avoid sugary beverages. Hot cocoa with a little splash of “holiday cheer” is so delicious, but try to avoid drinks high in sugar and opt for red wine or a low carb beverage. Alcohol contains empty calories, meaning that it does not provide nutritional value for your body or your teeth.
2. After a few drinks, choose an alternative. Reach for peppermint hot tea or sparkling water instead of another cocktail - even if the in-laws are driving you up a wall. Keep your sanity and sobriety.
3. Floss and brush your teeth after drinking. Tooth decay is caused by the sugar and acids contained in alcohol. When the sugar and starches from alcohol mix with your salvia, it forms an acid that breaks down tooth enamel. Think of enamel as the cork for your wine bottle, without it, your wine will go bad just as your teeth will begin to decay.
4. Drink plenty of water. Alcohol can result in dry mouth. Decreasing saliva results in dry tissue leading to bad breath and harmful bacteria in the mouth. Be an advocate for your overall health. Drink plenty of H2O before and during the night of festivities.
Cheers to a healthy holiday season filled with smart sipping!
