Keep Your Pet’s Teeth Healthy: 5 Reasons
Keeping your teeth healthy is important, but did you know your pets also have dental care needs?
Since most animal teeth are similar to human teeth, brushing at least twice a week and having a full evaluation by your vet once a year is a must.
Sadly, dental issues in pets are usually noticeable only in advanced stages, and even worse, your pet might be silently struggling to cope with the intense pain. Here are five reasons why your pet’s teeth should be cared for.
Bad breath: How nice would it be to play rough and tumble with your pet without being knocked out by strong whiffs of bad breath? If your pet has been sporting really bad breath lately, you can be assured that it is the onset of serious dental issues.
Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of periodontal disease, and pets are as prone to it as you are. It is the swelling of gums caused by excessive plaque formed on the surface of teeth. As gingivitis progresses the bacteria in the gum pockets release toxins that damage the gum tissues. Swollen gums can be sore and cause quite a bit of pain to your pets.
Periodontitis: Untreated gingivitis leads to periodontitis or severe gum disease, which is caused by excessive tartar build up on the teeth. This damages the soft tissues and bones supporting the teeth and can lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis can be devastating for your pet as it can cause pain while eating and chewing, discomfort from sore and swollen gums and even loss of teeth.
Pain and discomfort: Animals tend to hide their pain and discomfort as it is their natural instinct for survival. However, studies have revealed that dogs and cats have similar pain thresholds as humans, but unlike humans, they tend to hide their pain. Keeping your pet’s dental health in good order helps eliminate this unnecessary suffering.
Other health issues: The bacteria in the infected areas of the mouth can also pass into the other parts of the body infecting the heart, kidneys, intestinal track and joints. Caring for your pet’s pearly whites can prevent these related health issues.
