Sugar-Free Summer Drinks
Revised August 2021

Summertime and the livin’ is hot, which probably means you’ll want to reach for something cold and refreshing.
Before you head to the fridge to crack open that can of soda, stop! Sodas, sports drinks and juices are often loaded with sugar that can cause cavities and bad breath. They also don’t keep you as hydrated as you need to be in this heat.
Instead, try these easy recipes for summer drinks that bring on the flavor without added sugar. Make a pitcher for yourself and the family or serve at your next party.
Cucumber-Mint Infused Water
Cucumbers have impressive health benefits, such as blood pressure regulation, and can kill bacteria that cause bad breath. Mint, a popular herb, helps with digestion and inflammation associated with headaches and migraines.
Ingredients:
- 1/3-cup fresh mint leaves
- 1 cucumber
- 2 quarts of cold water, preferably fluoridated tap water*
Directions:
- Wash and peel the cucumber.
- Slice it into thin circles.
- Put the mint leaves in the pitcher. Use a wooden spoon to gently mash and stir to help release flavor.
- Add the cucumber slices and water.
- Stir and chill in refrigerator until cold. You can strain the water or pour it into glasses and serve as is.
Sugar-free Frozen Strawberry Lemonade
Strawberries are known to improve brain function, cut cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth and have a naturally sweet taste. This recipe combines those benefits with monk fruit sweetener, which has no calories and the approval of the Food and Drug Administration as a safe sugar alternative.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup lemon juice
- 3 cups fresh strawberries (you can use frozen strawberries with no sugar added)
- 2 cups cold water, preferably fluoridated tap water*
- Granulated monk fruit sweetener to taste
Directions:
- Wash the strawberries and cut off the tops. Place in blender.
- Add liquid ingredients to blender and blend.
- Add monk fruit sweetener to taste.
- Chill and serve.
* For extra fizz, substitute sparkling water
Sip sodas the smart way
Sugary drinks often lead to tooth decay that can negatively affect your overall health. But you can still enjoy your favorite soda on occasion if you sip smart.
