Berry Beneficial: Can Tasty Treats Tint your Teeth?

Revised July 2021

Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries—how berry exciting!

Picking and nibbling on fresh berries might be one of your and your family’s favorite summer activity. But with all of those bluish and purlish hues, should you worry about staining your smile?

Not really.

Berries’ health benefits trump temporary teeth tinting

You may have noticed that eating berries temporarily stains your teeth. But not to worry.  Just remember to rinse with water after you snack.

The good news? All that purple and blue (and red, too) is good for you. The health benefits of berries outweigh the temporary staining of your teeth.

  • Raspberries are high in anthocyanin, which occurs naturally in plant tissue. It provides anti-inflammatory benefits that boost heart health and improves blood flow. Worried about those pesky, little seeds? Carry floss in your pocket or purse, so you always have it on hand.
  • Strawberries are a source of polyphenols, an ingredient that may help break down starches. And polyphenols cut cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. Strawberries also contain malic acid, an astringent that removes tooth discoloration on the surface.
  • Blueberries have more antioxidants than any other fruit. Antioxidants can boost your immune system and fight free radicals, substances that can increase inflammation. And, like strawberries, blueberries contain polyphenols.
  • Blackberries stand out in fruit salads and desserts because of their dark color. Their deep purple also indicates a high concentration of antioxidants. Research suggests that their vitamin content may help reduce the risk of heart problems and periodontal disease.

When it comes to berries, pick on for your pearly whites! Happy snacking!
