Sugar Swap Showdown: Xylitol vs. Stevia

Revised August 2021

Bowl of sugar or sugar-like substance

Your taste buds might be sweet on sugar; your teeth, not so much. Cavities, is why.

Consider swapping tooth-friendly xylitol or stevia for sugar.

Let’s get a taste of each:

Xylitol vs stevia: What are they?

Xylitol: A naturally occurring alcohol found in most plant materials, xylitol is widely used as a sugar substitute in “sugar-free” candy, gum and mints. Powdered xylitol is popular for cooking and baking by those who follow a diabetic diet, are sensitive to sugar or wish to reduce their overall sugar intake. Even some toothpastes contain xylitol.

It is almost as sweet as sugar but contains only two-thirds as many calories.

What makes xylitol smile-friendly?

The sweeteners in xylitol interfere with the growth of bacteria and reduce enamel-weakening tooth enamel, therefore protecting your teeth

Stevia:
A native plant from South and Central America, stevia was approved by the FDA as a sugar substitute in powdered or liquid form made from the leaf extract. It has no calories and is 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. Please note that Stevia leaves and crude stevia leaf extracts are not FDA-approved food additives.

What makes stevia smile-friendly?

Like xylitol, stevia does not interact with teeth plaque and therefore, doesn’t contribute to tooth decay.

Xylitol vs Stevia: Which one should you choose?

Both are better for your smile than sugar, so which one should you choose? For many people, the decision comes down to taste.

Xylitol doesn’t taste different than sugar, but it’s about 5% less sweet. Stevia, on the other hand, tastes bitter to some people; others have compared it to menthol or noticed a licorice-like aftertaste.

The final decision is up to you. Do remember, whether sugar or sugar substitute, enjoy sweeteners in moderation.
