Losing your job isn’t easy. But getting coverage shouldn’t make things harder.

Losing a job is stressful. Aside from income insecurity, you have health and dental insurance to worry about. Here are 3 options to consider during your employment transition:

• Use It Before You Lose It.

Learn when your benefits terminate, as you may be covered until the end of the month in which you leave. Every week of extra coverage matters, so make a dentist appointment while you’re still covered.

• Apply for COBRA.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer continuation of your current insurance plans for up to 18 months after termination. COBRA will cover all health plans you had elected with your previous employer including vision and dental. The downside to COBRA? Former employees are responsible for the total premium both the employee and employer portion, which can be costly.

• Individual Coverage.

You may be surprised at what you’re able to afford when seeking out your own plan. Shop around for individual plans and reap the benefits of having these benefits. Click here to review Delta Dental’s individual dental plans.
