Have you ever experienced a zinger? We’re not talking about a witty comeback or a last-minute Razorbacks touchdown.

In the dental world, a “zinger” refers to that sharp, shocking feeling you occasionally get on your teeth. Zingers can happen when you eat ice cream or use whitening agents, but many times they occur in cold weather. Your teeth are accustomed to your body temperature, so when you open your mouth to chilly temps—ZING—fleeting irritation occurs.

Comeback from winter zingers with these Do’s and Don’ts:

Do…

Breathe Through Your Nose

Zip your lips to keep cold air out! Breathing through the mouth allows crisp air to fly in and “zing” your sensitive teeth. This can make your teeth expand and contract in between temperature changes and cause damage over time.

Use Floss and Fluoride

Flossing prevents receding gums, so pick up the slack in the string department (whether you get zingers or not). Use fluoride to strengthen enamel and seal sensitive areas.

Don’t…

Clench Your Teeth

We clench our jaws when we’re cold. You may think this helps warm you up, but it’s only harming your smile! Clenching your jaw and teeth can cause erosion, gum sensitivity issues, and headaches.

Brush Too Much

Over brushing can wear away enamel and increase gum recession. Both of these increase tooth sensitivity, cause pain, and create further oral health issues. Make sure your dentist is aware of your tooth sensitivities.

Keep it clever and reserve your best zingers for something other than your teeeth.
