Despite recent naysayers , flossing is still important to your smile. This daily habit can clean up to 40% of your tooth’s surface, reaching places your toothbrush can’t.

But just because it’s good for us doesn’t mean we like it. One reason people avoid flossing is because it can hurt. But falling in love with flossing doesn’t have to be a painful procedure.

Questions to consider when finding your perfect floss:

• Wax on or off?

Both types are equally effective in cleaning teeth, but waxed floss can slide between with a little more ease. Unwaxed floss works best with crowded teeth, and can appeal to those who don’t favor a waxy taste.

• What’s your flavor?

Mint, bubble gum, cinnamon? Maybe some bacon and waffles? No matter your palate, a preferable flavor could make your daily flossing experience a little more enjoyable.

• Thick or thin?

Choose floss that’s thin enough to fit between your teeth, but thick enough to get the job done. If your gums tend to be on the sensitive side, try a wider, flatter floss like dental tape, which can maneuver a little easier around the gumline.

• Thread or water?

If you really can’t stand the stringy stuff, try a flossing alternative. Tools like a water flosser can be just as effective as flossing, and may not cause you so much distress.

Remember: Healthy gums don’t bleed, and bleeding gums could be an early sign of gum disease. Talk to your dentist if you have any concerns.
