Show Your Teeth Some Love
Tomorrow is National Wear Red Day with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, and Delta Dental of Arkansas is getting in on the action.
Besides sponsoring the local Go Red for Women event in Little Rock, Delta Dental is also helping to educate about the correlation between heart disease and gum disease. We know, your oral health doesn't seem relevant to anything concerning heart disease, however, the opposite is true.
In fact, having gum disease roughly doubles the risk that a person will also suffer coronary artery disease. Gum disease can also make existing heart conditions worse.
People at risk for heart problems should be especially careful to practice proper oral hygiene and seek treatment for gum disease. Many heart medications can also cause dry mouth, increased plaque or enlarged gum tissue – all of which may lead to gum infection.
While the exact association between oral health and heart disease has not been identified, we do know that they go hand in hand. Talk to your dentist or periodontist about the best way to keep your gums – and your whole body – healthy for years to come.
