Father’s Day: Beyond the Tie and Greeting Cards
“A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again...” -Unknown With Father’s Day fast approaching, I began to wonder about the holiday; I understand why we celebrate our fathers, but when did we start and whose idea was it. I set out on a search for information that provided many facts I didn’t know. The idea to have a Father’s Day was created by a woman named Sonora Dodd while she was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in Spokane, Washington in 1909. Sonora’s father was a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after the death of his wife. After presenting her idea to the mayor, it was proclaimed that June 17 was to be the first Father’s Day celebration. In 1966, President Johnson declared the third Sunday in June to be Father’s Day and in 1972 President Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent. So, now that you know the history, check out this list of interesting facts about fathers and their special day: • According to The Survey of Income and Program Participation, there are 70.1 million fathers across the nation. • More than 110 million greeting cards are sent for Father’s Day throughout the world.
