Avoid Post Holiday Regret
It’s winter and you know what that means! Snuggling near a warm fire with a heaping helping of pecan pie and dare we say it… Bailey’s and Coffee. While we know that it’s not just the hot coffee that’s warming up your veins, we also know how your mouth takes a beating during this festive season. When you’re offered a refill, decline and try one of these festive but guilt-free substitutes.
Instead of hot chocolate with marshmallows… Try warming up with sugar-free hot cocoa with a minty kick. There are plenty of recipes to help make your hot chocolate drinking season safe for your teeth. Opt for small marshmallows that you don’t have to chew and for a bonus, make your drink with milk instead of water for a boost of calcium and a creamy taste.
Instead of red wine… Try white wine. It is a gross misconception that you should only indulge in white wine during the summer. In fact, there are many white wines that taste like heaven during the winter. Red wine is good for your heart, but too much over a period of time will stain your teeth. If you can’t resist the red, try to wipe your teeth with a tissue or swish with water when your glass is empty.
Instead of punch… Try club soda or seltzer water with a dash of water enhancer like Mio or Dasani Drops. Punch is usually loaded with sugar or juice, which contains a lot of natural sugar. Flavored club soda or seltzer water can taste even better during an office party or event.
Instead of the store bought eggnog… Make your own! Use low-fat milk instead of whole milk or cream to save you calories and unnecessary sugar. Use more egg whites and fewer egg yolks, and try using sweetener instead of sugar for taste. If you can’t make the swap or simply want to indulge, try to enjoy your beverage with a meal. Eating while you’re drinking will help keep sugars from clinging to teeth, keeping damage to a minimum until you can sneak away to brush. Forgot your toothbrush? Swishing with water will help rinse off the stuff that creates stains and decay. Make sure your smile survives the cold winter with these easy swaps.
