Arkansas' Favorite Toothy Animal
When you think of tusks, what comes to your mind - long protruding teeth from an elephant or walrus? Then you must not be from Arkansas! Here in Arkansas, we know that while there are a handful of other animals with tusks, there is only one Tusk! Meet Tusk, the live mascot of the Arkansas Razorbacks, our largest college football team. Now I must admit, for a dental blog, it is a little difficult to tie in football. But in Arkansas, we have a fun tooth commonality with our football team and it comes in the form of a 400 pound live mascot. Tusk is obviously named after his teeth, and this boar lives a great life by riding in a spacious Razorback red pen through the huge tailgating crowds making kids and adults smile ear to ear. With thousands of people coming to Little Rock to watch the Razorbacks this weekend, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to highlight one of our favorite toothy animals. There are dozens of Lions, Tigers and Bears, but in all of college athletics there is only one Razorback. And as one of only a few programs that still have a live mascot program, Arkansas is extremely proud of our beloved Tusk. To all the Razorback fans out there, here are a few fun facts to kick off the season: •Arkansas’ mascot was the Cardinals until becoming the Razorbacks in 1910 •In the 1920’s, “Woo Pig Sooie” or the “Hog Call” was added to the school yell •Except for rare sightings in the Australian Outback, the Razorback only exists today in the form of Arkansas’ players and fans •Tusk is a Russian boar which closely resembles the wild hog that the Razorbacks were named after •The current mascot is Tusk IV and is the offspring of the original Tusk •All the mascots are male because female swine do not have tusks Tusk’s tusks aren’t the only teeth we care about this season. The rest of the Razorbacks protect their teeth with mouth guards during the game. Check back next week to learn about the benefits of mouth guards and why this protective gear is a must for your child. If you are coming to the Razorback game in Little Rock this weekend, keep an eye out for Tusk and the Delta Dental Smile Cam which will be roaming the crowds to get your best tailgating smile!
