DIY Toothpaste for Your Pooch (+Why Brushing Matters)
It’s important to take care of your pup’s pearly whites. But instead of reading reviews on Amazon, why not make homemade toothpaste for dogs?
Before we tell you how to mix up this magical potion for your mutt’s mouth, learn why it’s important to brush your furry friend’s teeth regularly:
Contrary to popular belief, your dog’s mouth is NOT cleaner than yours. Canines carry mouth bacteria the same way humans do. Bacteria buildup can travel into your furry friend’s bloodstream and affect his kidney, heart or liver.
Even in animals, toothbrushes are the most effective way to remove plaque. An angled, soft-bristled brush can help you get into those nooks and crannies. For extra picky pooches, try a finger brush or daily dental wipes.
Once you invest in a toothbrush, make this paste for your pup:
• Spearmint oil, 16 drops
• Many commercial toothpastes for both pups and people include essential oils.
• Large glass bottle/canister with top (make sure the opening is big enough to fit your dog’s toothbrush)
• Coconut oil, ¾ cup
• Baking soda, 1 cup
In the container, thoroughly mix the coconut oil and baking soda until the mixture is smooth. Add the spearmint oil and mix until combined.
Now you’re ready to brush up! Remember: Dogs are prone to dental problems, so remember to brush their teeth at least once a week.
